Trout Fishing

100_1413 Churn Pool Fly Fishing season: 1st January to 30th June and 13th October to 31st December 2012.

Churn Pool is a superbly attractive lake located in the heart of the Cotswold Water Park.

It’s an excellent location for both the beginner & experienced angler with easy access and good casting areas.

Catch and Release
Here at Churn Pool, we offer and fully encourage our sporting ticket for the fisherman who’s simply looking for a bit of sport as not everyone who goes trout fishing wants to kill their catch. This is something few fisheries in the area offer, but with careful handling and good technique, the fish will remain healthy and active for others to enjoy.
Barbless hooks and an unhooking tool are essential for this practice and we recommend that the catch should be unhooked in the water rather than netted onto the bank

Stocking
During our season, we stock regularly with trout sourced from quality farms in the local area. To help alleviate shoaling, trout are also introduced from our own rearing facility in small numbers helping to keep the fishing as productive as possible.

Stocking weights start at 1¾ lbs up to around 9 lbs with an average rainbow coming in at 2 1/2 lbs. We also have a number of resident fish that hide themselves away, only being caught by a lucky few or perhaps the angler that knows where they dwell. We have seen some beautiful fish caught and returned over the years including Browns from 8 to 12 lbs and a few Rainbows touching 10lbs.

Fantastic brownie

While most of our fish are rainbow trout which hold the mid to high water, we also have a good number of blues & brown trout that can occasionally be seen in the margins, but more commonly reside in the deeper areas on the fishery which go from 12 to 18 feet.

You will be able to keep tabs on your catch rates as a member by keeping an eye on our website (News/Gallery section) with a news feed containing pictures and details of what’s going on around the fishery from what’s catching to a closer look at entomology

Tuition

Those new to fly fishing will often find casting a little daunting, especially around others, so we are happy to assist if required by going through the fundamentals of casting. Please send us a mail or call and we’ll be happy to put a few hours aside.

We can fully recommend the excellent services of Jim Williams, (AAPGAI Master) who is local to the area and offers tuition everyone from the beginner to seasoned expert can learn from.  Please see our links page for his details.

Graham

As with 2011, the two changes in 2012 are that there will be a small rise on the Season Ticket and the Trout Season will restart on 13th October rather than 1st as it did in 2010. The reasoning is as follows…

* The price of fish food and  is on the rise again (amongst other factors) which naturally has a knock on affect to the price of fish. While the cost would usually be passed directly to the Season Ticket holder, we have decided draw out the Coarse Season to handle the majority of the additional costs. We see this as the best course of action due to the weather patterns of recent years. This and last October were simply too warm to offer productive fishing.

*The residual heat of summer saw the consequence of low catch rates for most. Unfortunately, just a couple of weeks after the fishery returned to normal,  (along with many other waters) along came the sub zero temperatures. In any case, we have to make the best of what we are given.

We can’t win them all, but we will do our very best to provide our season members with a venue that offers quality fish, unrestricted visits and a friendly service. We very much look forward to seeing you on the bank in 2011.
