What Fly?

Well done to Dave Phillips, Dave Norrie and Shogo this weekend for landing some great fish in reasonably hard conditions. Trout were rising all over the lake, but appeared to be extremely selective. Most fell to emergers and parachute patterns fished into the ripple while Mr Phillips secured four on a size 16 PTN.

TURRALL MAYFLY GREY WULFF - MA07

Under the watchful eye of Alan Grunig, Saturdays tuition with the Wiltshire Fly Fishing School was great as we saw seven people new to fly fishing managing to cast and occasionally temp a few fish with one landed in time for supper.  Well done to your all.

Bank Holiday Weekend

Posted in Uncategorized on May 28th, 2010 by admin — Be the first to comment!

Just a reminder that there will be casting lessons for around 10 clients on Saturday afternoon so it may be busy. Saturday morning, Sunday and Bank Holiday are business as usual. (Saturday evening too, for that matter)

Friday evening saw a great rise from about 20.30 with some very nice rainbows taking the Mayfly and other tasty morsels until nearly 10pm.

The weather looks to be a mixed bag but it should remain largely overcast so the fishing should be okay. As the water tempurature ramains in the early 60’s,  you’ll often have to work a little harder and either fish deep or really look at what’s hatching.  Tight lines !!!

Great results in poor weather (for fishing)

What a scorcher this weekend was. Opening the gate at 07.00 on Saturday morning, I thought the fishing would be a washout with more people catching sun stroke than rainbows. However, Alan Christopher set the pace after an hour without a touch by suddenly launching into 5 trout before departing for lunch.

The Honeyborne party largely had a good result overall considering the hot, still conditions with a hand-full of rainbows and the odd brownie. Well done to you all.

Sunday proved to be tropical with me (Daniel) largely asleep all day while Shogo and Bob landed their limits.  Notable mentions go to Mr Waller & Mr Phillips for persisting and catching also.

So what worked on this especially warm and cloudless weekend? Damsels and Cats Whiskers proved to be essential, fished on the bed of the lake with sinking lines or 18ft + leaders. There were small patches of ripple towards the west side of the lake and that’s where the fun was!

Turn the telly off !!!

For anyone after some great sport after work, the evenings have seen some great rises. Dry fly action has been fantastic with Emergers, Sedge and F-Fly’s doing the business. What better way to finish the day?

Not a member? Evening tickets are available after 5pm for £15.  3 fish limit with the option to retain your first fish. Tight lines!!!

Many thanks to all thoe who were able to attend our Bank Holiday BBQ. We beat the weather by a couple of hours and everyone had a great time catching up, munching burgers and landing a few fish.
We’ll have another towards the end of June before we close the trout fishing for the summer. Until then, get yourself on the bank and enjoy the Mayfly hatches.

The Fishing

With fresh stock in on Friday 23rd, Churn Pool fished well over the weekend with Shogo and Bob Hicks amongst others landing some beautiful rainbows and missing plenty more.  Today (26th April) fished exceptionally well with Stan Kerslake and Ian White landing their limit with the bonus of a fantastic brownie on the bank also. Mac Lowe also returned to form with three rainbows for the freezer. It was great to see Darwin Turner back on the bank this evening and even better to see four fish landed with Diawl Bachs and a Muddler.

Cheltenham & Gloucester Fly Dressers Guild:

Irish Lough Style Flies

Tuesday 4th May Cheesrollers Pub, Shurdington, Nr Cheltenham.
7.30 for a 8.00pm start.

Those of you who are regulars to the fishery may have spotted some legendary casting coming Steve Cole. If you are lucky, you might have even seen his fly box!

Steve will be giving a tying demo & talk at the Cheltenham & Gloucester Fly Dressers Guild at the Cheersrollers pub in Shurdington on 4th May.  With many years of fishing behind him and countless trips to Ireland to sample their trout waters, we’d count Steve as an authority when it comes to trout flies wherever he fishes.

BBQ !!!

On May 1st, we will be having a BBQ for our Members and Day Ticket customers and should kick off at about 12.00.

Make sure you bring some degreaser if you are fishing in the afternoon. It’s no good tying on a leader line with sausage fingers !!!

Saturday 10th April

Posted in Uncategorized on April 10th, 2010 by admin — 2 Comments

The bright sunlight really pushed the fish deep into the water, but Saturday saw a a return to form with Shogo managing five 3lb rainbows on a Marabou Damsel with a few others catching here and there. People had to work hard for their fish and a few unfortunately blanked, but the evening saw a good rise to which Steve Wrigley tempted one with a Cats Whisker before changing to an Emerger and landing a beautiful rainbow of 3lb 7oz.

Easter Weekend

Posted in Uncategorized on April 1st, 2010 by admin — Be the first to comment!

Well, it looks like the weather won’t be quite as bad as predicted earlier in the week so we might have some suitable fly fishing conditions this weekend. We had a small top up of rainbows today (2-3 lb fish)  and will stock again on 9th April with about 350lbs of rainbows with a few browns mixed in.

Nick Hall managed to bag up this week with his signature buzzer closely followed by Mike Waring tempting the fish with his trusty lure patterns.

Anyone wanting to get started with a bit of fly dressing or further their current knowledge may be interested in the North Wiltshire Fly Fishing Club who meet at the Wroughton Working Mens Club every Thursday evening or the Cheltenham and Gloucester Fly Dressers Guild which meet at The Cheese Rollers in Shurdington near Cheltenham on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month.  A little further from home (from Cirencester anyway) is the Pheasant Fly Fishers Club in Chippenham.
