A great weekends fishing had by all

A cracking weekend was had at Churn Pool with many members and Day Ticket holders reaching their limits. Notable mentions go to young James Bowen-Jones with a 5 3/4 rainbow and not so young Ian White with another at 5lbs 7oz. David Orr from Oxfordshire had a very enjoyable afternoon with three between 3-5lbs and Trevor Marsch made a promising return to the water and a good start to the year with a 5 3/4 pounder.
Black lures took the majority of fish with a few falling to buzzers and the odd nymph.
Mid-morning appears to be the most productive time at the moment with constant signs that the trout ar rising from deeper water to take the fly and indeed fry at about 3 feet below the surface.

Wednesday Jan 20th
Despite the icy conditions the lake has been fishing very well for those willing to brave the elements!

A cracking rainbow at 4lb taken from a small clearing in the ice, visable in the background of the photo. This fish was part of a brace, with plenty of bites also.

The above pictures are of Josh Hillman with a cracking 5lb+ and myself with a good 3lb+ taken as the sun set, from a small patch of defrosted water. Cheers, Tom

One for the early birds: The fishery has thawed enough to allow access to a small number of swims towards the northwest.
Well done to Graeme and Ron for landing some smashing fish yesterday. As you can imagine, fry patterns are doing well at the moment. We’ll advise on the diet of spooned fish as and when…
Bank rebuilding is ongoing, but should only offer minimal disruption. We’d gladly swap a shovel for a cup of tea if you are feeling fit.

Just a reminder that the Big Cat Talk presented by local trackers, Frank Tunbridge and Rick Minter will be taking place on 21/1/10 in Sandhurst near Gloucester.

Still frozen at the moment. In fact, the ice is still the best part of two inches thick around most of the fishery.
We’re taking this opportunity to reshape and rebuild a few of the banks so access to some swims should be a little better when we see you next.
If you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to drop us a mail.
Saturday 16th January – Ice Update:
Upon closer inspection, Churn Pool and the local waters actually have up to three inches of ice. It looks to be getting weaker as time passes so we’ll keep you posted….
Big Cats: 21/1/10 – Sandhurst, Glos.
For those who are interested or have had sightings, local trackers Rick Minter and Frank Tunbridge will be holding their latest Big Cat Talk on 21st January. Info as follows……

Have a few escaped and released cats gone feral and melted into the landscape, or are these animals now breeding?
How do the cats range through their territories?
How do people react when they experience these animals, and what are the implications of big cats being here, for people and for other wildlife?
Rick Minter is author of the forthcoming book ‘Facing our own wild predators’.

Churn Pool still has a good inch of ice covering the water, but there are signs of thawing. This weekend may be another opportunity to dress your favourite winter flies and get ready for action.
